Hazel McCallion Light Rail Transit – Mississauga to Brampton, Ontario

Client: Metrolinx and Infrastructure Ontario
Completed: September 2024
Project Value: $4.6 Billion

As Mississauga and Brampton expand with new residents, businesses and amenities, sustainable and reliable transit becomes vital. The 18-kilometre Hazel McCallion Line (named to commemorate the former mayor of Mississauga and referred to as the Hurontario LRT during construction) will bring a new, environmentally friendly and reliable method of transportation to this rapidly growing region. The new transit system will feature 19 stops, travel through two urban growth centres and connect to major transit systems including GO Transit (Milton and Lakeshore West lines), the Mississauga Transitway, Brampton Transit, ZUM and MiWay. The Hazel McCallion Line will operate in its own dedicated lanes ensuring a smooth, reliable and convenient ride along the region’s busiest street. The LRT will operate with clean, electrically powered light rail vehicles, producing near zero emissions. So, not only does the LRT line get cars off the road, but it’s a more sustainable, environmentally conscious way to travel!

The project’s scope of work includes full reconstruction of 18 kilometres of Hurontario Street, including utility relocations, road widening, track and guideway construction and installation of train power and control systems. It also includes construction of new elevated guideway structures crossing over Highway 407 ETR, Highway 403, Rathburn Road, and Centre View Drive, modifications to existing structures crossing Highway 401 and Whittle Road, major channelization works at Mary Fix Creek to protect the LRT from potential flooding and new structures crossing under Queen Elizabeth Way and the Lakeshore West GO corridor, which are being constructed as concrete boxes adjacent to the respective corridors which are then pushed into place, an innovative method which has significantly reduced highway and rail traffic impacts and the first time such method has been used in Ontario. The project also includes 18 at-grade LRT stops, one underground LRT station, an operations, maintenance and storage facility all accompanying mechanical and electrical systems, and supply of the light rail vehicles.

Amico is a member of Mobilinx, a consortium of local and international companies, selected by Metrolinx to design, build, finance, operate and maintain the LRT system. As part of the Project Co., the Design-Build Joint Venture, and the Civil Joint Venture, Amico is providing overall project strategic decision-making and coordination and direct collaboration and interface with Metrolinx, as well as project controls, subcontract relationships and management, and health & safety management. In addition, Amico is a primary heavy civil subcontractor for the project, performing excavation, grading, and construction of municipal utilities, roadworks and major civil structures.
